Author guidelines

Intelligence, Mathematics and Society welcomes original research, short communications, stories, commentaries, review articles, perspectives, research notes, case studies, methods articles, book reviews, letters and editorials within its aims and scope. Manuscripts must be written in English. Before submitting, read these instructions and the publishing policies, and ensure that all authors approve the manuscript and its submission.

1. Preparing the manuscript

Present the research question or purpose clearly, explain the methods or analytical framework, and distinguish findings from interpretation. State the contribution, relevant assumptions, and material limitations. The structure may be adapted to the article: empirical research, mathematical work, reviews, and conceptual perspectives need not use identical headings.

  • Title and authors: Provide a concise title, the names and affiliations of all authors, and the corresponding author's contact details. Include ORCID identifiers where available.
  • Abstract and keywords: Summarize the purpose, approach, main findings or argument, and implications. Supply 5–8 keywords.
  • Main text: Use clearly organized, numbered sections where appropriate. Define specialized terms and notation so that readers from related fields can follow the work.
  • Figures, tables, and equations: Number items consistently, cite them in the text, provide informative captions, and ensure that labels and mathematical notation remain legible in the submitted file.
  • References: Use a consistent reference style. Check that citations match the reference list and supply sufficient bibliographic information to identify each source, including a DOI or stable link where available.

2. Author identity and review

The journal uses single-anonymous peer review. Include author names, affiliations, and correspondence in the manuscript; an anonymized author file is not required. Reviewers can see author identities, while their identities remain confidential to authors.

3. Templates and manuscript files

LaTeX is recommended, particularly for manuscripts containing mathematical notation. Use the journal's version 1.0.0 Review layout and compile main.tex with XeLaTeX. Authors using Word may begin with IMS-Review.docx or the corresponding DOTX template. The author templates are available on this page.

Replace all instructions, placeholders, sample references, and demonstration figures with your own manuscript content. Leave editorial metadata for the editorial office. Check the exported PDF carefully, including fonts, equations, figures, tables, references, and page breaks.

For initial submission, provide a complete, readable main manuscript and any supporting materials needed to assess the work. LaTeX submissions must include the source files and a compiled PDF manuscript. Authors must compile and check the PDF before uploading it. Word submissions may be submitted as DOCX without a separate PDF. Include the bibliography and figure files needed to reproduce a LaTeX manuscript. Check the file formats and upload limits shown in the submission form.

4. Research declarations

Include accurate declarations appropriate to the work:

  • Funding: Identify financial support and relevant grant information, or state that no specific funding was received.
  • Competing interests: Disclose relevant financial and nonfinancial interests, or state that there are none.
  • Data and code availability: Explain where relevant materials can be accessed, or describe restrictions and their reasons. State when no research data or code apply.
  • Ethics: Report required approvals and consent arrangements where relevant, or explain why approval does not apply.
  • AI assistance: Disclose substantive use of generative AI or AI-assisted tools, describing their role. Authors remain responsible for the accuracy, originality, and attribution of the manuscript.

Author contributions statement

Authorship gives credit for contributions to a study and carries accountability. Manuscripts with multiple authors must include an Author Contributions Statement. Use author initials to identify each author's contribution, such as research design, methods, analysis, manuscript writing, or preparation of figures. All authors must review and approve the manuscript.

Example: A.B. and C.D. wrote the main manuscript text and E.F. prepared figures 1–3. All authors reviewed the manuscript.

Acknowledge assistance where appropriate. Do not include identifiable participant information or confidential material without the necessary permission.

5. Submission checklist

  • The manuscript fits the scope, is written in English, and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • All authors have approved the submission and their names, affiliations, and contact information are correct.
  • The manuscript includes an abstract, 5–8 keywords, references, and the relevant declarations.
  • Figures, tables, equations, citations, and supplementary files are complete and readable.
  • The uploaded files contain the intended version, and permissions for reused material have been addressed.

Sign in to the submission system, enter the manuscript details, add the authors, upload the files, and complete the declarations requested by the form. You can return to an unfinished submission from your author dashboard. Check the submission record after completing the process.

6. Decisions and revisions

Follow the submission record in your author dashboard for editorial decisions and revision requests. For a revision, upload an updated manuscript and a separate point-by-point response file addressing the editor's and reviewers' comments. The response file is required to complete a revision and must explain the changes and any comments not adopted. It is not required for an initial submission. Provide a version showing changes if requested by the editors. Revising a manuscript does not itself establish acceptance.
